Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump tried unsuccessfully Wednesday to persuade a crowd in Nevada their state is pronounced a different way.

"Nev-AH-da," Trump said at a campaign rally in Reno. "Nobody pronounces it the other way. It has to be Nev-AH-da.

"If you don't say it correctly, and it didn't happen to me, but it happened to a friend of mine, he was killed."

Associated Press reporter Jonathan Lemire was at the event and mentioned Trump's comments on Twitter:

Another reporter, Mike Higdon of the Reno Gazette-Journal, said it appeared Trump was joking with the crowd.

According to Time, the correct pronunciation is Nev-AD-a.

A recent Suffolk University poll found Trump is 6 points behind Democrat Hillary Clinton with just over a month to go before the presidential election.
