Former President Donald Trump was entirely to blame for the events of Jan. 6, 2021, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a Friday appearance on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher," Mediaite reported.
The interview followed the release of previously unseen footage by CNN, recorded by Pelosi's daughter, documentarian Alexandra Pelosi. The video offers an expanded look at Pelosi's actions and statements on Jan. 7, 2021, a day after the violent breach of the Capitol.
In one clip, Pelosi is seen saying, "I take responsibility," which prompted Maher to inquire about its meaning during the interview.
Maher speculated that Pelosi referred to the need for stronger security measures during the Capitol riot.
"No, what I'm talking about is that we didn't demand that the president — fiirst of all, who could have ever thought that the president of the United States would incite an insurrection or against the Congress, the Constitution?
"I'm not ever taking responsibility for Donald Trump," she said. "But I'm — only responsibility I will take for Donald Trump is to make sure he is not reelected."
Maher acknowledged that he had long warned of the potential for such an event, expressing frustration that others did not heed similar warnings. Pelosi, however, focused her criticism squarely on Trump, accusing him of resisting the deployment of the National Guard during the insurrection and lying about his actions.
