GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Mitt Romney said they would confirm Joe Biden’s cabinet as long as they’re mainstream, reports Politico.
The three give Biden a working majority on Cabinet picks, even if Democrats fail to win runoff races on Jan. 5 in Georgia.
Many news outlets have called the race for Biden, though Newsmax won’t project a winner until states certify results. President Donald Trump has refused to concede, citing voter fraud.
Romney, of Utah, told Politico he believes a ''president ought to be able to pick his or her Cabinet barring someone who is out of the mainstream of either party.''
Maine Sen. Collins said she gives ''great latitude'' to presidents to make appointments.
Murkowski told the news outlet that ''all presidents have a right to their Cabinet.''
''He’s our president-elect,'' she said. ''All presidents have a right to their Cabinet. Our job, our role is to make sure that he selects folks that are … within the mainstream. And are good, qualified credible candidates. And if he does that, sure, I am going to work with him.''
Biden is expected to begin naming his major Cabinet appointments by Thanksgiving. He is likely to turn to longtime confidant Tony Blinken as secretary of state.
