The Democratic Party's presidential nominee Joe Biden currently leads President Donald Trump ahead of their first debate showdown in the latest national poll from Monmouth University.

Biden holds a slight edge over Trump, but it's smaller than the advantage he held following the Democratic National Convention. The poll resuls show:

  • 50% of registered voters support Biden.
  • 44% back Trump.
  • 6% are undecided or support a third candidate.

Earlier this month, Biden led 51% to 44% among likely voters. The change may be due to a swing among independent voters toward Trump. Earlier this month, Biden led with independents, 47% to 40%, but in the most recent poll Trump has come out ahead, 47% to 46%.

Monmouth also found that Biden has a firm base of support, with 43% of all registered voters saying they are certain they will vote for him, while 40% of registered voters are firmly for Trump. However, 49% of all voters are not at all likely to cast a ballot for Trump, and this number has barely fluctuated all summer.

"Half the national electorate has been dead set against reelecting the president all along. But that does not mean they have completely gotten behind the challenger, particularly in the most competitive areas of the country," Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement.

Monmouth polled 809 registered voters from Sept. 24-27, and the margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
