Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney would perform better than Texas Gov. Rick Perry as the Republican opponent against President Barack Obama in next year’s election, according to a new poll from Public Policy Polling. The survey shows voters prefer Obama over Romney 49 percent to 45 percent, barely surpassing the poll’s 3.8 percentage-point margin of error.
But Obama leads Perry 52 percent to 41 percent. That represents a widening of Obama’s 49 percent to 43 percent lead just three weeks ago. The drop in support for Perry appears to stem from his criticism of the Social Security system, according to
PPP.
Among other presidential candidates, Obama leads former House Speaker Newt Gingrich 53 to 41 percent and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann 53 to 39 percent.
