Mitt Romney, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, on separate occasions Friday said he generally approves of the president’s agenda but will not hesitate to call him out when he disagrees with his behavior or actions.
“I’m not always with the president on what he might say or do, and if that happens I’ll call ‘em like I see ‘em the way I have in the past,” Romney said during a speech he gave at the Utah County Lincoln Day Dinner shortly after he announced he was running for Senate. “But we can certainly work together and our agenda will be for the best interest of the people of Utah and for the people of our country.”
Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee and former Massachusetts governor, earlier told reporters he agreed with Trump’s domestic policy agenda, including “lower taxes, lower regulation, lower bureaucracy.”
The president, he said, has been “pretty effective” to date.
"You have to look and say how’s it been in the first year and frankly a lot’s been done,” he added.
"Where I have taken exception is with some of the things he's said or tweeted. He's not going to change, and I'm still going to be the guy who calls them like I see them," Romney said.
