Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was forced to reiterate privately what he had already said publicly — women are welcome to attend the working healthcare meetings, The Hill reported.
In fact, McConnell made it clear any Republican in the caucus is welcome to attend the thrice-weekly meetings as Republicans in the upper house go to work on their own plan to repeal and replace Obamacare.
"He basically told the lunch that everyone in the caucus was invited," one member of the working group told The Hill. "He told the lunch that everyone in the caucus, including the women, can come."
In what could best be described as a contrived story authored by Democrats, McConnell has taken heat for not including any women in his 13-person small group to tackle healthcare.
"You know, you need to write about what's actually happening, and we're having a discussion about the real issues," an exasperated McConnell told reporters earlier this week over the nothingburger story.
"Everybody's at the table."
Lost in translation over the manufactured hubbub is that there are but five women in the Republican caucus, making it difficult to guarantee that at least one be present for every meeting.
"I don't that we can all guarantee that. We all have schedules that change," Sen. Joni Ernst was quoted by The Hill.
