The Senate Leadership Fund, a PAC aligned with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, is poised to spend millions to retaliate against former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, The Washington Post reported.

Bannon started it, but allies of McConnell are not going to sit back and take it.

Bannon has pledged to oust Republicans aligned with McConnell, painting them as detrimental to the platform of President Donald Trump. The SLF, without knocking Trump, has devised a strategy to boost its candidates, knock down Bannon's populist candidates while painting him as a white supremacist, the Post reports.

Bannon has millions from hedgefund billionaire Robert Mercer and his daughter Rebekah; the SLF has its millions, too.

It's all-out warfare. At stake: the slim 52-48 majority Republicans have in the Senate.

"This is a guy who is more interested in seeing his name in the headlines than he is in any kind of accomplishment for the president," Josh Holmes, a former chief of staff to McConnell, told the Post in reference to Bannon.

"It comes at great cost to the president's term, the Republican Party and any hope they can have at working as a team," Holmes told the Post.

Bannon won Round 1 in Alabama by backing controversial judge Roy Moore over SLF favorite — and Trump-backed — Luther Strange in the special primary to fill the seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Round two is revving up in Nevada where Bannon is backing Danny Tarkanian in the GOP primary over vulnerable incumbent and SLF-backed Sen. Dean Heller.

Bannon is playing on a strategy of knocking out the venerable but vulnerable McConnell from Senate leadership over the upper chamber's inability to pass any meaningful legislation under Trump.

The SLF is using its own brand of guerilla warfare to counter attack — "white supremacist."

"This is not a guy that just burst on the scene. Let's not act like everybody doesn't know exactly who Steve Bannon is," Holmes told the Post.
