Gingrich: Akin Win Could Rebuke GOP Establishment

Wednesday, 31 October 2012 12:33 PM EDT

Former presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich says Missouri voters can send a powerful signal to "the moneyed Republican establishment" by electing congressman Todd Akin over Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Gingrich joined Akin on Wednesday for a rally with about 100 supporters at Kansas City's historic Union Station.

He said an Akin victory not only could help Republicans gain a majority in the Senate but could teach a lesson to national GOP leaders — including presidential hopeful Mitt Romney — who abandoned Akin after he remarked that women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in what Akin called "legitimate rape."

Akin apologized for the remark but rejected calls to quit the race.

Dozens of McCaskill supporters protested at Tuesday's rally, including many with signs referencing Akin's rape remark.
