A former Republican lawmaker said he believes President Donald Trump is "flailing" amid the swirling controversy about a phone call with a world leader that could lead to his impeachment.
Mike Rogers, a Michigan Republican who served in the House from 2001-2015 and chaired the House Intelligence Committee during his final four years in office, told CNN Sunday night that Trump appears to be grasping for lifelines.
"I think this is somebody who's flailing a little bit and feels like to me — when he does it, it emboldens the people who have figured out he's guilty. They thought he's guilty when he got sworn in," Rogers said.
Rogers was specifically referring to Trump's attacks on a whistleblower who claimed the president tried to use his office for political purposes and Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat who chairs the Intelligence panel and who is leading the impeachment effort.
"I just don't think it's very productive, I don't think you should go directly after a whistleblower. That'll be determined through the course of the investigation that should happen, by the way, in a classified settings."
Mediaite posted a clip of Rogers' appearance.
Trump has spent the last several days trying to discredit the whistleblower, who cited a July 25 phone call between Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy in his complaint, and Democrats.
