President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey Tuesday in a "very quick-ordered plan" because of "lots and lots of concerns about the image of the FBI," former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said.
"There were lots of concerns, both inside the FBI and outside with legal scholars, about the entire handling," Rogers, the former Michigan Republican who chaired the panel from 2011 to 2015, told Wolf Blitzer on CNN.
He was referring to last year's investigation by the FBI into Hillary Clinton's private email use.
"Even back to announcing the investigation and closing the investigation – and then the investigation reopened just 11 days out and closing it before that.
"Lots and lots of concerns about the image of the FBI.
"It is an important institution in America, and Americans need to see this institution as an absolutely nonpartisan enterprise that works pretty hard and handles difficult cases and counter intelligence cases around the country."
Rogers added that "I worry about this – and I worry about what will happen next.
"You want a smooth transition. I hope it's quick."
