A leading Republican lawmaker applauded the Trump administration's decision to send CIA Director Mike Pompeo to North Korea for a clandestine meeting with reclusive leader Kim Jong Un.
A short time after President Donald Trump confirmed that Pompeo met with Kim on Easter weekend, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., was asked about it during a breakfast with reporters.
"I like the fact that Pompeo met with him. I hope that a lot of other people will meet with him. And I hope there's huge amounts of precursor activity that takes place before [Trump and Kim] meet," Corker said during the event put on by The Christian Science Monitor.
Trump and Kim are slated to hold a summit sometime in the coming months over North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons. Trump said Pompeo and Kim formed a "good relationship" during their meeting.
Corker wants to see other top U.S. officials talk with Kim before Trump himself sits down with the leader he once called "little rocket man."
"I look at [Pompeo's meeting] as a first step, I think that's intelligent. I hope that a lot of other people will be doing the same thing," Corker said.
