Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flew to North Korea on Tuesday to meet with officials at the reclusive nation ahead of a planned peace summit between its leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump.
While revealing his decision to withdraw the United States from the Iran nuclear deal Tuesday afternoon, Trump noted Pompeo was due to land shortly.
"At this very moment, Secretary Pompeo is on his way to North Korea in preparation for my upcoming meeting with Kim Jong Un," Trump said. "Plans are being made, relationships are building. Hopefully a deal will happen. And with the help of China, South Korea, and Japan, a future of great prosperity and security can be achieved for everyone."
Trump was asked to expand on the matter after he finished his speech and had signed a memorandum to pull the U.S. from the Iran agreement.
Pompeo "will be there shortly . . . probably an hour," Trump said. "He has meetings set up. We have our meeting scheduled. We have our meeting set. The location is picked. The time and the date, everything is picked. We will think it will be a great success."
It was reported Monday that Trump and Kim will likely meet in Singapore in June to discuss the denuclearization of North Korea.
Last week, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani — who is now on Trump's legal team — said three Americans currently being held in North Korea will soon be released. Trump would not confirm the release will take place, only saying, "We will soon be finding out. It would be a great thing if they are."
Pompeo secretly traveled to North Korea over Easter weekend and met with Kim, an encounter that was not made public until weeks later.
