Vice President Mike Pence said Thursday he supports special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, and that the Trump administration is "fully cooperating" with the probe.
"My view of all these matters is that the special counsel has a job to do," the vice president told CBS News' Margaret Brennan in an exclusive interview during his unannounced trip to Afghanistan to visit U.S. troops and meet in Kabul to urge that Afghanistan's leaders move forward with elections that have been on hold for some time.
"We're fully cooperating with that inquiry," Pence said of Mueller's probe, "but for the president and myself and our entire administration, we're focused on what the American people hired us to do."
Pence also commented on the significance of former national security adviser Michael Flynn's guilty plea to lying to the FBI about his contacts with former Russian envoy Sergey Kislyak, and about President Donald Trump's statement that he fired the retired lieutenant general for lying to the vice president as well.
"What I can tell you is that I knew that he had lied to me — and I know the president made the right decision with regard to him," the vice president said, after Brennan asked him if he knew Flynn had lied to the FBI when Trump fired him.
