Rep. Mike Ezell, R-Miss., rejected the arguments of four of his fellow Republicans who foiled the attempt to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by joining Democrats in voting against the move Tuesday.
Ezell told Newsmax on Wednesday that there are just and constitutional reasons for removing Mayorkas from office.
Ezell, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee that reviewed the evidence against Mayorkas, said that he heard the case against the secretary for a year, telling Newsmax's "Wake Up America" that "Americans are in danger. Americans are dying" not only due to the incompetence of Mayorkas, but also a lack of law enforcement.
"As a former sheriff and a 42-year police officer, had I not upheld the duties that I was sworn to do, I would have been removed from office. ... This man needs to be impeached," Ezell said.
Asked why there should be another attempt to impeach Mayorkas when the Senate, with a Democrat majority, almost certainly would not find him guilty and he thus won't be removed from office, Ezell said that it's about doing "what is right."
"When you swear to the American people that you are going to protect this country, you are obligated to do so," Ezell said. "This man is absolutely circumventing the law by not upholding his duties.
"Although it will probably not happen over there in the senate if we get this done, we are doing our job that we were sent up here to do, and that is holding people accountable for what they do or don't do."
