Michigan's Peters Plows Different Democratic Path

Michigan's Peters Plows Different Democratic Path

Friday, 21 March 2014 12:38 PM EDT

In his quest to join the U.S. Senate, one Michigan Democrat is venturing to a lot of places where his party doesn't normally go, seeking support from people who don't normally back Democrats and saying things they might not expect to hear from a Democrat.

Gary Peters is trying to win over some GOP voters while remaining true to his party's shrinking urban, labor-based core.

The bookish congressman and former banker touts his support for the auto bailout and the 2010 Small Business Lending Act. He also voted against increasing the debt limit three years in a row and has teamed with a Republican on a bill to require agency heads to defend their budgets line by line.

His opponent is Republican Terri Lynn Land, former secretary of state.
