Former CIA Director Michael Hayden on Friday ripped the Republican memo alleging FBI surveillance abuses, saying that "it's wrong" and that it was completed for President Donald Trump's "personal, legal and political advantage."

"It's wrong," Hayden, who also directed the NSA, told Jake Tapper on CNN. "It is not good work.

"It leads to a conclusion that everyone I know who has been involved in this process has: It is just incorrect."

The memo, released by the House Intelligence Committee after President Donald Trump's approval, alleged that the FBI obtained a warrant from the Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court to monitor former Trump campaign aide Carter Page based on an unsubstantiated dossier containing negative information about the president.

The document was prepared by Republican Intelligence Committee staffers and overseen by Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes of California.

"What you have here is opening the door to something we've never done," Hayden told Tapper.

"Hyper-partisanship for a process that was near sacred ground in terms of career professionals talking only to judges so you don't have the political influence, left to right.

"We've set a precedent," he said. "We've gone to a place we've never gone before."

A retired four-star Air Force general, Hayden was unimpressed by the document.

"This is your best shot? This is it?" he told Tapper. "This is what you got?"

Hayden later added: "But, fundamentally, I think people were doing their job, moving in a direction that was warranted that a [FISA] court agreed with and produced results."

He added that the document's release very likely has FBI employees questioning their mission, despite Trump tweeting support earlier for the agency's "rank and file."

"This is a part that has the workforce asking, 'Am I still part of a good thing?'

"That was done for the president's personal legal and political advantage," Hayden said. "Not out of his constitutional responsibilities."
