Former Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday that the Republican memo alleging FBI surveillance abuses whose release President Donald Trump approved was "dangerous, ugly, and an assault on the integrity of the institutions of our country."

Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate who served under former President Barack Obama, took to Twitter:

The declassified memo asserted that the FBI obtained a warrant from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court to monitor former Trump campaign aide Carter Page based on an unsubstantiated dossier containing negative information on the president.

The document was prepared by GOP staffers of the House Intelligence Committee and overseen by Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes of California.

Trump slammed the memo, telling reporters at the White House that "I think it's terrible.

"I think it's a disgrace what's going on in this country," Trump said. "I think it's a disgrace."
