Mexico said it is not encouraging illegal entry into the U.S. and rejected President Donald Trump's claims it is not doing enough to stop it, CNN is reporting.
"Under no circumstance does the government of Mexico promote illegal migration," the Mexican Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Mexico reacted to Trump's tweets on Sunday and Monday regarding an immigrant caravan heading in the direction of the United States, CNN said.
According to CNN, a migrant caravan of over 1,000 people is now moving north through Mexico. The caravan's goal is to "flee Central America" and seek asylum either in Mexico or the U.S., CNN reported.
The Mexican Foreign Ministry said the caravan is mainly made of people leaving Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. It said 400 people from the caravan did not enter Mexico lawfully and had already been sent back to their countries.
And the foreign ministry said Mexico "does not make immigration decisions for the United States or any other nation." The statement noted that the respective authorities "will decide whether to authorize or not the entry of those who are part of the caravan."
Meanwhile, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said his government will continue to work with the U.S. in a, "proactive and cordial spirit during negotiations and mutual respect."
