The "consistent negative coverage" first lady Melania Trump gets in the press does not reflect the substance of her work, her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, insisted Monday while taking offense at a CNN contributor's opinion piece criticizing her.
"She just got her facts wrong," Grisham told Fox News' "Fox and Friends," while explaining why she chose to respond to CNN contributor Kate Anderson Brower's column that complained the first lady does not understand the duties of her job.
"Just hours before this op-ed posted, she was at a hospital here in D.C. visiting children," said Grisham. "She had gone to two air bases and flown out on aircraft carrier to thank them for their service. The day before that, (she attended) a toy drive for Toys for Tots. For me, the timing of the op-ed was offensive."
Grisham added that Brower was also not correct with her claim that Mrs. Trump does not understand her duties.
"Mrs. Trump has successfully pulled off a state dinner at the White House," she said. "She successfully planned and executed every holiday event that has happened here at the White House. She oversees a resident staff of almost 300 people."
She also defended the relationship between the first lady and the president.
"These two get along and watch each other's back more than any couple I have ever seen," Grisham said. "She gives him her opinion certainly. He listens sometimes. Sometimes he does not. She is always very vocal and they talk a lot and he is open to listening to her opinions."
