Democrats Meek and Ferre Tied in Fla. Senate Race

Thursday, 04 February 2010 10:33 PM EST

MIAMI, FL - Even with a 10 month campaign advantage and being outspent roughly 33 to 1, a new swing state poll shows Democrat Maurice Ferre virtually tied with Miami Congressman Kendrick Meek when placed head-to-head with the Republican challengers.

The first major polling of the Florida Senate race in 2010 indicates Ferre, the former 12 year Mayor of Miami has caught the frontrunner Meek in just the first few months of his campaign.

"Even with hundreds of thousands of dollars in special interest money and insider support, Meek has not come out a winner in this or any other poll released," said Ferre. "The reality is that this race is competitive. I will be the Democratic nominee for Florida."

The Swing State Poll of 800 likely 2010 voters conducted by Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates (FMA), a major Republican pollster, shows that Ferre garners nearly the same amount of support against either of the Republican candidates, even though as of December 2009 Congressman Meek had outspent Ferre $1,175 million to $46 thousand. Furthermore, the poll reveals that Ferre beats Meek with Independent voters against either of the Republican candidates. Independents will be crucial in the 2010 general election and Ferre, a centrist Democrat, would have a better chance of beating the Republican nominee.

"Meek, the apparent frontrunner has campaigned for a full year, spending over one million dollars, but this poll clearly demonstrates that spending money isn't resonating with the Florida voters," said Ferre. "My campaign is just gaining momentum and we are virtually tied in the recent poll. There is a lot of work ahead. I am excited."
