The president of the conservative Club For Growth on Sunday defended President Donald Trump’s trade war — despite the group’s opposition to tariffs as “a tax on the American people.”
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” David McIntosh said Trump's negotiations with China and around the world illustrate “the art of the deal.”
“Trade is a difficult issue,” he said, responding that even Club For Growth is struggling with it.
“Tariffs are a tax on the American people,” he said.
But, he added, “I think you have take a step back and look at what’s going on at the G-7” summit in France.
“It’s the art of the deal,” he said. “What we like about President Trump’s vision on trade is his goal of zero-zero tariffs. These tariffs are his way of forcing China to come to the table. They’re costly… but he’s using them to get to that ultimate goal of zero-zero tariffs.”
