Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told President Donald Trump to stop attacking Republican senators, including Mitt Romney, R-Utah, Politico is reporting.

McConnell’s comments to the president came during a meeting last week. And Politico noted it appears Trump is listening. The Republican senators likely will determine Trump’s fate as impeachment moves along.

Politico noted Trump is largely laying off senators with difficult calculations to make. He is not lobbying Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Marco Rubio of Florida and Johnny Isakson of Georgia.

And, after calling Romney a “pompous 'ass'” in a tweet, Trump appears to have backed away from further attacks.

Still, he has not gone silent on the issue of impeachment.

Last Thursday, he vented to 10 Republicans meeting with him in the White House.

“He said he thought the process was unfair and he hadn’t done anything wrong. And he wanted us to know that,” said one of those who attended the get-together.

And CNN noted Trump has told Republican lawmakers defending him in possible impeachment proceedings would be easy.

"And, frankly, I told Republicans, who are really being taken advantage of -- they're really being maligned -- and I think it's a horrible thing ... So, one thing I said: I'd rather go into the details of the case rather than process," Trump told reporters.
