House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told fellow House Republicans on Monday that President Donald Trump acknowledged to him that he bears some of the responsibility for the affray at the U.S. Capitol last week, Politico and Breitbart News reported citing unidentified sources.

Breitbart said it confirmed, per an anonymous source, what a Politico reporter posted to Twitter earlier, that McCarthy, R-Calif., revealed the admission during a conference call.

Neither Politico nor Breitbart mentioned if they had sought comment from the White House.

McCarthy’s comments follow his letter to the Republican conference in which he recommended against impeachment.

“Personally, I continue to believe that an impeachment at this time would have the opposite effect of bringing our country together when we need to get America back on a path towards unity and civility,” McCarthy wrote.

Democrats have called for Trump to be impeached, removed via the 25th Amendment, or resign. Even Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania have publicly called for Trump to resign.

House Democrats have drafted a single article of impeachment on the charge of “incitement to insurrection” and plan to vote as early as Wednesday, according to reports.
