Andrew McCarthy Slams Trump For Claims About FBI Probe into Cohen

By    |   Sunday, 16 December 2018 07:38 PM EST

Former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy slammed President Donald Trump on Sunday for his claims about the FBI investigation into his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen.

“Sir, in mobster lingo, a ‘rat’ is a witness who tells prosecutors real incriminating info. Perhaps a different word?” McCarthy wrote in a tweet, adding that “Searches of lawyer’s offices common enough that DOJ has a procedure for them. Here it yielded evidence of crimes you said he should be jailed for. You should stop."

McCarthy’s criticism came shortly after Trump wrote on Twitter: “Remember, Michael Cohen only became a ‘Rat’ after the FBI did something which was absolutely unthinkable & unheard of until the Witch Hunt was illegally started. They BROKE INTO AN ATTORNEY’S OFFICE! Why didn’t they break into the DNC to get the Server, or Crooked’s office?”

The FBI raided Cohen's home, office and hotel room in April, seizing documents and computer files, with the search warrants partly based on a referral from special counsel Robert Muller, according to The Hill.

Cohen was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for crimes he committed while working for Trump. Prosecutors said Cohen made payments that violated campaign finance law at the direction of Trump, claims which the president has denied.
