Matt Drudge, a long-running conservative media firebrand, is turning on President Donald Trump amid the latest impeachment push by House Democrats, CNN reported.
Drudge founded the Drudge Report in 1995 and has long been supportive of the president, even reportedly making visits to the White House early in his term, but the website has published a larger amount of negative news against Trump, having soured on his shortcomings, per the report.
"He's reacting to changing circumstances," a source close to Drudge told CNN Business.
The turning over of one of Trump's leading conservative media backers is a key piece of building a public narrative for impeachment among right-wing Americans, CNN noted.
"He's one of the dominoes that would have to fall for the right-wing media to allow Trump to be removed from office," conservative John Ziegler told CNN.
Jerome Corsi, who was embroiled in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into 2016 election meddling, has tweeted Drudge has "lost his mind," "turned left," and is now a "leftist hack beating [the] impeachment drum."
The Drudge Report originally gained notoriety breaking the Monica Lewinsky scandal with then-President Bill Clinton in the 1990s.
"Impeachment is where Matt Drudge entered," a source close to Drudge told CNN. "This is a great story. And Drudge is breaking out the popcorn."
