USA Today calls it “wacky,” The Hill calls it “zany,” and Politico calls it “the most bizarre endorsement video this month.” It’s actor Steve Martin promoting the candidacy of Democratic Senate candidate Bob Kerrey in Nebraska.
The video shows Martin engaged in an arts-and-crafts project — how to make a wad of paper. About 45 seconds into Martin’s two-minute explanation, a person outside of camera range sticks a series of sheets of paper in front of the camera with messages about Kerrey.
Watch Steve Martin's endorsement. Story continues below.
“My friend, Bob Kerrey, is running for the U.S. Senate in Nebraska," says the first, followed by “He is a principled man whom I have known and respected for many years.
The messages go on to say Kerrey "ares about the people of Nebraska" and 'considers both sides of every issue to determine what’s best, before saying "he is sane. And his ideas are workable."
All the while Martin continues to show how to use staples, brads, chewing gum and paper clips to make a wad of paper which "can be fun to play with around the house or maybe toss expertly into a trash can."
Perhaps Kerrey is feeling desperate. The last four polls compiled by Real Clear Politics, spanning from March through Sept. 20, show Republican Deb Fischer with an average lead of 14 percentage points.
