Residency Questions May Cause Problems for Markey In Senate Run

Thursday, 03 January 2013 04:47 PM EST

The attack on Democratic Rep. Ed Markey’s residency by Scott Brown already has campaign surrogates sniping at each other, despite the Senate seat they may both run for not technically being available yet.

Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry has not been confirmed as secretary of state but Brown questioned Markey’s residency, and candidacy, in a radio interview Wednesday for WTKK-FM in Boston.

Brown said he could not remember seeing Markey on any of his flights in the last two years between Boston and Washington, and asked, “Does he even live here any more?”

“Scott Brown has not yet announced that he is running for Senate, but he is already launching false, personal attacks from the sidelines,” Giselle Barry, a spokeswoman for Markey, told the Washington Post. “Ed Markey lives in Malden, and has lived there his entire life. He and his wife own their home in Malden.”

According to Markey’s campaign, the congressman last year took 34 round trips between Washington and Massachusetts.

In 2010, Markey’s campaign opponent lobbed the same criticism at him, going so far as to interview people in his neighborhood who claimed to never see him at his house.
