President Donald Trump needs to "stop some of the weird stuff" in order to gain the confidence of many of the voters in his Republican district in South Carolina who elected him in November, Rep. Mark Sanford said Wednesday.
"Many people are struggling with it," he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Trump's presidency. "They applaud the Supreme Court appointment.
"They applaud many of the Cabinet appointees. They applaud the way in which he's beginning to roll back regulations.
"But some of the weird stuff, standing up at the prayer breakfast and comparing your ratings in 'The Apprentice' to [Arnold] Schwarzenegger's is weird," Sanford said. "That does give them pause.
"It does give them concern because he's got a big job."
At the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington on Feb. 2, Trump poked at Schwarzenegger's ratings on the show he created in 2003.
"When I ran for president I had to leave the ['Apprentice'], Trump said. "They hired a big, big movie star — Arnold Schwarzenegger — to take my place."
He continued, calling out producer Mark Burnett: "And we know how that turned out. The ratings went right now the tubes, it's been a total disaster. And Mark [Burnett] will never, ever bet against Trump again."
The president then said with a laugh, "I want to just pray for Arnold if we can — for those ratings."
Sanford told Blitzer that voters in his district also were troubled by Trump's Twitter use.
"They want him to succeed — and they want him, at times, to let go of these fairly minor tail-chasing endeavors he seems to engage in on a regular basis, with Twitter and others."
