President Donald Trump will be acquitted very quickly, and there is no reason that his impeachment trial should linger any longer as the nation gears up for the November election, Rep. Mark Meadows told Fox's "Sunday Morning Futures."
The North Carolina Republican, who is a member of the House Oversight Committee, said Trump's defense team did a great job in its opening arguments on Saturday explaining what lead House impeachment manager Adam Schiff didn't tell the American people.
He added that they "really went a long way to undercut the foundation of what Adam Schiff and his team laid out on three previous days" and said that on Monday the defense will present "a strategic building upon that foundation to tell the rest of the story."
Meadows stressed that Trump's team will build up "step by step, block by block, the reasons why there's not only not an impeachable case but certainly not even anything that comes remotely close to high crimes and misdemeanors. This is all about politics. It has nothing to do with witnesses or anything else. It is all about a political allegation, trying to impugn the president's reputation."
Former South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy mocked impeachment manager Jerry Nadler's strategy of insulting Republican senators in the trial, telling "Sunday Morning Futures" that he would let Nadler to "take all the time he wants to talk."
Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, said he's been in many courtrooms and "never, ever saw a prosecutor have as a strategy let's see what we can do to infuriate, alienate, and offend the jury."
