White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said Monday that presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway’s upcoming departure, which she announced on Sunday, will be “a big blow” to the White House.
“It’ll be a big hole, a big blow to us,” Meadows said on “CBS This Morning” in an interview.
“We certainly will be praying for her as she made this decision that some people will see … as a difficult decision,” he said. “But I believe if you ask Kellyanne Conway, she believes she made the right decision for her family.”
“For now, and for my beloved children, it will be less drama, more mama,” Conway said on Sunday.
Conway’s husband, George Conway III, who is a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, also announced on Sunday that he would leave the Lincoln Project, a group dedicated to preventing Trump’s reelection. On Saturday, their teenage daughter wrote on Twitter that she is “officially pushing for emancipation,” from her parents.
“Kellyanne is going to be missed. America loves her,” Meadows added on Monday. “We certainly will miss her here at the White House. But listen, this is all about making a priority for family. That’s what this president’s about, and that’s what Kellyanne Conway’s about.”
Meadows also dismissed the notion that Conway is leaving the White House because Trump’s reelection chances are in doubt.
“That is cynical, and anybody who knows Kellyanne Conway knows that she has never shied away from a fight,” he said. “And so to suggest that is just not based on the facts.”
