In a move that further hints that Marco Rubio is continuing to solidify the support of the GOP establishment, the Florida senator has been endorsed for president by one of Mitt Romney's key allies.

John Rakolta Jr., a national finance co-chairman for Romney's 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns, made the announcement Monday, the Washington Post reports.

Rakolta, CEO of a construction company in Detroit, has had close ties to the Romney family for decades, the Post reports. He is the fourth former Romney finance official to support Rubio, the paper notes.

In a letter acquired by the Post, Rakolta seemed to reference the fading Bush brand as he wrote, "America is facing new challenges that require new leadership. My entire life has been about looking forward not backward, and after carefully considering all the candidates for president, it's clear to me that Marco Rubio is best prepared to lead America forward in this new century."

"Rakolta said that he chose Rubio after weighing the candidacies of several other establishment favorites, including former Florida governor Jeb Bush, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Ohio Gov. John Kasich," Post reporter Phillip Rucker writes.

His decision is more bad news for the flagging Bush campaign.

An article in the Detroit News earlier this month had mentioned Rakolta as one of several "indifferent or conflicted" Bush supporters.

The News reports Rakolta gave "a maximum $2,700 contribution to Bush’s campaign in September."

But it also noted that "[h]is wife, Terry, sent Rubio a $1,000 check."

“I wanted to see a fair contest among who I consider the viable candidates,” Rakolta told the News. “But just like everyone else, I’m waiting for this field to consolidate, and it doesn’t seem to be consolidating.”

On Monday, Rakolta made his choice.

"Articulate and confident, [Rubio] represents a new breed of Republican leader who can unite our party and win both the primary and general elections," the Post reports him writing in his letter endorsing the 44-year-old.
