Sen. Marco Rubio has praised Miami Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills, who kneeled during the playing of the National Anthem on Sunday, saying that one doesn't have to agree with the protests to acknowledge how much time Stills puts into acts of community service.
“No @NFL player does more community service than @KStills of the @MiamiDolphins,” the Florida Republican tweeted Wednesday. “You don’t have to agree with how or why he has chosen to exercise the 1st Amendment before every game to acknowledge the hours he gives voluntarily, on his day off, to serve his fellow Americans.”
His message was part of a retweet from Stills' account, where he posted himself and other team members visiting disabled military veterans during part of the team's "Community Tuesday" effort.
Two days before, on Sunday, Stills and teammate Albert Wilson kneeled during the playing of the National Anthem before the team's first home game on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, according to Fox News.
Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who started the kneeling protests in 2016 to speak out against police violence against minorities, applauded them on Twitter, saying that they continue to show "unwavering strength" and that their "courage will move the world forward."
