If both GOP candidates running for U.S. Senate in Maine get their wishes, there will be no Republicans in the race.
That's because in this hotly-contested election in the Pine Tree State, state Sen. Eric Brakey and financial planner Max Linn say each other should be booted off the ballot.
Brakley has accused Linn of submitting dozens of fraudulent signatures, including four from dead people, The Bangor Daily News reports.
An ally of Linn then filed a complaint challenging the ballot status of Brakey, alleging without evidence that a person who notarized signatures for his campaign had been convicted of rape in the 1990s, according to the newspaper.
Both challenges will get public hearings within a week. According to Maine law, in order to throw a candidate off the ballot, a challenger must prove that certain signatures should be invalidated.
Brakley and Linn hope to beat Sen. Angus King, an independent, who assumed office in 2013 and is running for re-election.
