Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love would be the first Republican African-American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives if the latest polls out of Utah are correct.
Love led incumbent Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson by seven points, 50 to 43, according to the Salt Lake City Tribune. The six-time member of Congress has been trailing Love for weeks.
The conservative Mormon Love has received an increasing amount of attention after appearing at the Republican National Convention in August and building a respectable lead in her first statewide race.
Love’s race, religion and sex have added an element of historical excitement to her campaign, garnering her even more attention that she has said she’s not concerned with.
“You know, I’m just worried about getting our country back on track,” Love told CNN. “If I can do that and we can get our country back on track, that’s the history I’m interested in making.”
