President Donald Trump has made a more generous offer than former President Barack Obama made when it comes to the nation's Dreamers, but Democrats are still not happy, Rep. Louie Gohmert said Monday.
"They are purely acting on politics," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" about Democrats' reaction to Trump's immigration framework, which offers an eventual path to citizenship for 1.8 million Dreamers, or people brought to the United States illegally when they were young.
"I think the president threw out there a much more generous offer than what President Obama had," Gohmert said. "I mean, [Obama] had 700,000 or so that were benefiting from DACA (the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program) that was clearly unconstitutional."
But Trump "offers to legalize several times more than that and what do they do? They say that's not good enough."
Trump's plan calls for the action on Dreamers in exchange for $25 billion in border security and other measures, including a border wall.
Further, Gohmert is skeptical that the wall will be built, and fears that a "bait and switch" could be in play.
"[There] has been in the past, by both some establishment Republicans and Democrats," Gohmert said. "But it's time to secure the border. If we get the border secure, then we will be able to work out things for those who are here, get rid of the gangbangers and all that until the border is secured."
Gohmert also claimed the Border Patrol is telling him that the "surge is back, and now families are coming in droves bigger than ever."
"When we talk about amnesty, the Border Patrol men say they immediately get a surge," said the Texas lawmaker. "Let's get the border secured. Every time, especially a conservative talk about legalization, numbers are up. They dropped to nothing last year. Now back up bigger than ever because we are talking about amnesty."
