Sen. Lindsey Graham praised President Donald Trump's statement Wednesday that he would support a pathway to citizenship for those affected by the DACA program — possibly occurring within as many as 12 years.

"This statement represents presidential leadership on immigration that will allow us to solve a difficult problem," the South Carolina Republican said in a statement. "I truly appreciate President Trump making it clear that he supports a path to citizenship for DACA recipients.

"This will greatly help the Senate efforts to craft a proposal which President Trump can sign into law."

At an informal session with White House reporters, Trump said that "we're going to morph into it," referring to a path to citizenship for the estimated 700,000 aliens affected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

"It's going to happen at some point in the future over a period of 10 to 12 years," he said. "Somebody does a great job. They worked hard. It gives incentive to do a great job.

"They've worked hard. They've done terrifically.

"Whether they have a little company or whether they work or whatever they're doing — if they do a great job, I think it's a nice thing to have incentive of, after a period of years, being able to become a citizen," Trump said.

The White House is scheduled to release Trump's immigration plan framework on Monday.

Graham and Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin proposed a permanent fix for DACA in a Jan. 11 meeting that Trump rejected — and a stalemate in the Senate over the issue last week eventually led to a two-day federal government shutdown that ended Monday.

Graham on Wednesday called Trump's endorsement a "strong statement."

"President Trump's support for a pathway to citizenship will help us get strong border security measures as we work to modernize a broken immigration system," the senator said.

"With this strong statement by President Trump, I have never felt better about our chances of finding a solution on immigration.

"President [Barack] Obama tried and couldn’t fix immigration," Graham continued. "President [George W.] Bush tried and couldn’t do it.

"I believe President Trump can. Today’s DACA recipients can be tomorrow’s Trump Dreamers.

"Finally with this statement, we are on track to solving the immigration problem, which is the political key to rebuilding our military."
