Graham's Open-Mic Offer to Kerry: 'Help' With Boehner on Ukraine

Graham's Open-Mic Offer to Kerry: 'Help' With Boehner on Ukraine

By    |   Friday, 14 March 2014 08:52 AM EDT

Sen. Lindsey Graham’s offer to Secretary of State John Kerry to “let me know what I can to do help you with Boehner’ — captured on an open mic Thursday — was referring to helping Boehner overcome his opposition to the Senate version of a Ukraine aid package, The Blaze reports.

The South Carolina Republican senator’s offer made instant headlines and spiked curiosity about what he meant.

A Graham spokesman told The Blaze the senator’s comments mirrored remarks he made to The New York Times, published a day earlier, in which he said he was trying to persuade  House Republicans to support a Senate version of a Ukraine aid package that would provide unused U.S. Military money to the International Monetary Fund.

Graham supports the legislation, he told the Times, even though he was “not thrilled about taking the money away from the military.”

His offer to Kerry occurred after the Secretary of State concluded his testimony to the Senate Appropriations Committee about providing economic assistance to Ukraine after the ouster of its president and the invasion of Russian troops there.

As he walks past, Graham bends down and whispers in Kerry’s ear: “Hey John, good job. Let me know what I can do to help you with Boehner."

Kerry stands up and the two are seen, but not heard, talking.
