Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., strongly defended Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has come under fire from President Donald Trump, and slammed the president's pressure on Sessions to investigate Trump's White House rival Hillary Clinton.
"He's a rock-solid conservative, but above else he believes in the rule of law," Graham said in a statement issued on Twitter.
"Jeff understands that we are a nation of laws, not men. On occasion, I've vigorously disagreed with Jeff, but I've never once doubted his integrity or sense of fair play."
Graham called it "highly inappropriate" for Trump to suggest that Sessions shoudl "pursue prosecution of a former politial rival."
Trump targeted Sessions in a Tuesday morning tweet saying the attorney general has taken a "very weak position on Hillary Clinton crimes."
And in an interview with The New York Times last week, Trump criticized Sessions. The president said he would never have picked him as attorney general if he had known Sessions would end up recusing himself from the Russia investigation.
Meanwhile, Graham said he was concerned over Trump's tweet about Sessions, The Hill reported.
"President Trump's tweet today suggesting Attorney General Sessions pursue prosecution of a former political rival is highly inappropriate," Graham said.
