Trump: 'Libyan Model' Won't Apply to North Korea

President Donald Trump said Thursday the "Libyan model" on nuclear disarmament would not apply to North Korea because Tripoli was "decimated" and leader Moammar Gadhafi was killed in a popular uprising in 2011.

"There was no deal to keep Gadhafi," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office before a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. "This would be with Kim Jong Un, something where he'd be there; he'd be running his country.

"His country would be very rich. His people are tremendously industrious.

"But the Libyan model was a much different model," Trump said. "We decimated that country.

"We never said to Gadhafi: 'Oh, we're going to give you protection. We're going to give you military strength. We're going to give you all of these things.'

"We went in and decimated him — and we did the same thing with Iraq," the president said.

North Korea has threatened to pull out of the June 12 summit in Singapore between President Trump and Kim, citing references by National Security Adviser John Bolton to Libya, which dismantled its nuclear program in the 2000s in exchange for sanctions relief.

Gadhafi was killed by rebel forces in popular uprising in October 2011.

Pyongyang has frequently used Gadhafi's death to justify its own nuclear development in the face of perceived U.S. threats.

"When John Bolton made that statement," Trump told reporters, "he was talking about if we're going to be having a problem because we cannot let that country have nukes.

"We just can't do it."

"But the model, if you look at that model with Gadhafi, that was a total decimation," the president added.

"If we make a deal, I think Kim Jong Un will be very, very happy.

"But this is just the opposite."
