Gordon Chang: NKorea Using Bolton's Comments as 'Excuse' to Quit Summit

Author Gordon Chang told Newsmax TV on Wednesday that North Korea is citing National Security Adviser John Bolton's comments about Libya as an "excuse" for raising the possibility of pulling out of next month's summit with President Donald Trump.

"They're essentially an excuse," Chang, a leading expert on Asia, told "Newsmax Now" host John Bachman in an interview.

"John Bolton spoke to 'Face the Nation' in late April — and after that, the North Koreans freed the three Americans.

"The North Koreans wanted an excuse, so they picked on John Bolton," he said.

The North Korean news agency KCNA called Bolton "awfully sinister" for saying Libya's decision to denuclearize during the George W. Bush administration should be a model for U.S. policy toward Pyongyang.

Bolton told Fox News radio he was not surprised by the remark.

"It's nothing new," he said.

In 2003, Bolton said, "the North Koreans objected to my characterization of Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un's father, as a dictator and other things.

"They called me human scum. They called me a bloodsucker.

"They said I was a very ugly fellow," Bolton said. "So, I kind of get used to it."

Chang told Bachman that "the North Koreans have been unnerved by Bolton's comments, not so much as national security adviser, but when he was a Fox News contributor.

"Then, he often talked about striking North Korea's nuclear and its ballistic missiles facilities."

Bolton, who served as U.N. ambassador under Bush, was a Fox News commentator from 2006 until President Trump named him to his White House post last month.

President Trump and North Korean dictator Kim are scheduled to meet June 12 in Singapore.

"Nonetheless," Chang told Bachman, "we are seeing — essentially — the North Koreans use this as sort of an excuse for what they were going to do anyway."
