Progressive Democrats and liberal groups unleashed their own fire and fury on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for reaching a funding deal with Republicans to reopen the government.

At issue: Senate Democrats forced the government shutdown over permanent protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, provisions they still don't have after Schumer "caved" or "blinked," depending on the rhetoric from the left wing.

"It's official: Chuck Schumer is the worst negotiator in Washington ― even worse than Trump. Any plan to protect Dreamers that relies on the word of serial liars like Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan or Donald Trump is doomed to fail," CREDO political director Murshed Zaheed said in a statement.

"This is a bad, outrageous deal. Trump and Republicans in Congress stood with their anti-immigrant nativist base, and too many Democrats backed down, abandoned Dreamers, and failed to fight for their values," MoveOn.org Political Action Executive Director Ilya Sheyman said in a statement.

Most Senate progressives were more muted in their criticism of Schumer, showing their disapproval by not voting to reopen the government. However, California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris expressed their "disappointment" with Schumer's decision.

While Schumer's name is mud with the extreme left of his party, sane Democrats saw the New Yorker's play for what it was — practical and necessary.

Democrats secured funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for 6 years, and they have more than double the amount of Senate seats to defend than Republicans in November.

And he secured the guarantee of a debate on the Senate floor.

"We went in with a very weak set of cards, with [25] people up for re-election," one Democratic senator told The Hill.

"He's doing a great job under very difficult circumstances," Sen. Cory Booker said of Schumer.

Booker was one of several Democratic 2020 prospective presidential hopefuls who voted against the funding deal.

The prediction was all along that it would be a short shutdown, one just long enough for Democrats to rile the base ahead of November's midterms, but Schumer's shutdown only served to rile them up against him.

"Call it the #SchumerSellout," Zaheed said. "Hashtagged."
