If the government does shut down Friday night, it'll likely be a short one, lasting just long enough for Democrats to stir up their base ahead of the upcoming midterms, Tom Rogan wrote in a column for the Washington Examiner.

Then, they'll cut their deal with Republicans and be done with it, Rogan writes.

"The Left sees this shutdown as an easy opportunity for election year voter mobilization and donor fundraising," Rogan writes. "Democrats know their base is now at a stage of mouth-frothing fury when it comes to President [Donald] Trump and Republicans."

At the end of the day, this is "partisan posturing" by Democrats over Republicans tying acceptance of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) into the spending bill.

It's not a policy dispute; Democrats approve of the spending bill, just as Republicans are amenable to working out DACA and CHIP, Rogan writes. It's just the politics at play for both.

"Behind the scenes, Democrats on Capitol Hill know that the president and congressional Republicans are being quite reasonable," Rogan writes. "Democrats are aware that it's in their interest to cut a deal.

"And so we're heading for a short shutdown. That option is the only one which gives Democrats the best of both worlds: the opportunity to rail against Trump without the risk of policy failures that would reverberate into November's midterms," Rogan writes.
