Newly elected Rep. Luke Letlow, R-La., was in stable condition in intensive care with COVID-19, a spokesperson said Wednesday.
Letlow was hospitalized Saturday before being transferred to an ICU unit at Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport, La., spokesman Andrew Bautsch posted on Letlow's Twitter account.
The 41-year-old Letlow was receiving the antiviral medication remdesivir and steroids to help combat the virus, Shreveport Academic Medical Center Chancellor Dr. G.E. Ghali said.
Letlow was admitted to St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, La., as "a precaution" on Saturday, one day after testing positive. Bautsch added Letlow and his family deeply appreciated the medical care he has received and were "thankful for all of the prayers and support they continue to receive."
Letlow defeated State Rep. Lance Harris, R-Alexandria, in a Dec. 5 runoff to represent Louisiana’s 5th District. He succeeds Republican Ralph Abraham, for whom Letlow was chief of staff.
President Donald Trump and his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani both received remdesivir after each tested positive for COVID-19. The World Health Organization, however, recommended against the drug as a coronavirus treatment in November due to a lack of evidence that it increases survival rates among patients.
