Lawmakers in Washington state are once again delving into the complexities of open carry laws as Republicans rally support for Senate Bill 6033, which aims to permit ceremonial open carry on the Capitol Campus, a move that has garnered bipartisan interest, The Center Square reported.
During a session with the Senate Law & Justice Committee on Monday, Allen Acosta of the Veterans Legislative Coalition underscored the significance of the bill. "Our primary focus is to provide honor to our members laid to rest, but we also represent many veteran events such as Welcome Home Vietnam War Veterans ceremonies, POW and MIA day, and others," Acosta stated.
He emphasized the time-honored tradition of providing proper honors during such events, particularly highlighting the ceremonial rifles. Acosta clarified, "The rifles in formation represent protecting our flag. Our ceremonial rifles are different from our funeral rifles. They are painted white, and the rifle bolts and the cartridge are rendered useless."
Wash. State Sen. John Braun, R-Centralia, the bill's sponsor, clarified the intent behind SB 6033. "I think you've seen this SB 6033 before, and this is just about allowing certain ceremonial guards to carry non-functional weapons," said Braun.
