Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., on Sunday called for a national ban on chokeholds.
In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Lankford said a ban is long overdue for the kind of restraint Minneapolis police used on George Floyd, who died after one of the officers pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds.
"We should have that,” he said of a national ban of the restraint.
“That was one of the things that we should have engaged in a long time ago,” adding: "There's been a long standing principle out there that that is not needed for that situation.”
Lankford also said it was time to stop naming military bases after Confederate leaders.
There are “lots of great” modern military leaders that we can honor,” he asserted.
