The political editor of the Los Angeles Times, Cathleen Decker, came under fire Monday after tweeting a finding from the Congressional Budget Office about the Republican healthcare plan resulting in "thousands of births" in low-income and rural areas, The Washington Free Beacon reports.
"By CBO's estimates, in the one-year period in which federal funds for Planned Parenthood would be prohibited under the legislation, the number of births in the Medicaid program would increase by several thousand, increasing direct spending for Medicaid by $21 million in 2017," reads the office's report.
Decker tweeted about the GOP plan on Monday, following the release of the Congressional Budget Office's report.
Numerous twitter users criticized Decker for her tweet, which some interpreted as expressing "horror" at the thought of children being born in poor or rural areas.
Decker added later that the number of births would rise due to reduced access to contraceptives, and that the report focused on the impact that spike would have on Medicaid spending.
