An official representing the Koch brothers on Sunday called Donald Trump’s refugee and travel ban "counterproductive."
"We believe it is possible to keep Americans safe without excluding people who wish to come here to contribute and pursue a better life for their families," said Brian Hooks, co-chairman of the Koch network. "The travel ban is the wrong approach and will likely be counterproductive.
"Our country has benefited tremendously from a history of welcoming people from all cultures and backgrounds. This is a hallmark of free and open societies."
Trump on Friday signed an executive order banning travelers from seven majority-Muslim countries associated with terrorism from entering the country for 90 days. The countries are Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.
It also suspended entry of all refugees for 120 days and indefinitely halted the admission of refugees from Syria.
The Koch brothers, influential libertarian-minded donors, didn't publicly support Trump during the presidential election, instead opting to put their money toward congressional races.
They are one of many voicing disapproval of Trump’s ban. Many Democratic lawmakers called for Trump to rescind his order and thousands protested around the country, mostly at airports, calling for the release of those detained there.
The Koch network spent roughly $250 million on last year’s elections while sitting out the White House race. The network also operated groups such as Americans for Prosperity, i360 and Libre Initiative.
