Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., said Sunday that President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from the border of Turkey and northern Syria “falls through” on his “biggest campaign promise” — to defeat ISIS.
In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Kinzinger, a former Air Force service member who served in Iraq, called the pullout “really depressing,” and an instance of “yet again… abandoning” an ally, referring to the Syrian Kurdish forces.
“He falls through on his biggest promise, to defeat ISIS,” Kinzinger declared, adding: “We have another group who believes they can’t rely on the United States."
“The Kurds found out on Twitter that we left them to the wolves," he said. "The message to the world is really bad."
According to Kinzinger, “when the United States pulls back, chaos follows,” and that the nation shouldn’t “run away from every conflict we have.”
“I think the president needs to be aware…. one of the things [voters in his GOP district] loved is that he says what he means,” he said.
“The president has a lot of power… significant sanctions,” he pointed out. “But I think he needs to follow through on them…there is now a war commenced in Syria because we pulled 50 troops out.”
