President Donald Trump has the right to enact his threatened tariffs against Mexico, and it may be the appropriate thing to do, Rep. Pete King said Friday, but he still hopes that the consequences are watched very carefully.
"On the China tariffs, I have had some businesses in my district which were affected," the New York Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "Probably, people wouldn't have thought they would actually be hit hard but it, but they are. Again, look at this carefully. If the president wants to do it, I think we should support him."
King said the companies in his district that were affected by the China tariffs were ones that used items from China to assemble other products.
"Nobody was thinking of them, but they are the ones hit by the tariffs," said King. "Somebody buying a good directly from China wouldn't get hit by the tariff but people using supplies from China to make the goods would be. This is something no one anticipated. There are probably other cases like this across the country. That's what I'm saying: There are many unintended consequences."
King said he did not think anyone knew the tariffs were coming, and now he thinks the United States should try to limit the impact as much as possible.
King also discussed the ongoing talk of whether impeachment proceedings should be brought against Trump, commenting that he thinks it would be "dangerous" for the United States if that happens.
"I thought there was no basis for an investigation to begin with, no evidence of collusion, no proof of collusion," said King. "I thought Mueller lost his nerve. I don't accept his interpretation that he couldn't have indicted."
